Lady Gaga has officially confirmed that she will star as Harley Quinn in the highly anticipated sequel to Joker, titled “Joker: Folie á Deux.” The news was initially leaked as a rumor, but Gaga confirmed the reports by posting a teaser on her Twitter in June 2022. In the teaser, she and Joaquin Phoenix can be seen swaying to Louis Armstrong‘s “Cheek to Cheek” while bathed in red light.

Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Joker in the original movie, will reprise his role in the sequel. And Gaga is reportedly putting in an equally impressive performance as Harley Quinn, as evidenced by a first-look photo that she shared on Feb. 15, 2023. The image features the two characters staring into each other’s eyes with crazed expressions.
Joker: Folie á Deux is being directed by Todd Philips, who previously worked with Gaga as the producer of A Star Is Born. The film is set to hit theaters on Oct. 4, 2024. Not much is known about the plot or production schedule of the movie, but the title of the film suggests that it may explore the shared madness between Joker and Quinn.
In the original comics, the two villains meet at Arkham Asylum, where Quinn is Joker’s psychiatrist and falls in love with him. They eventually become partners in crime, but their relationship is notoriously tumultuous. It is unclear if the sequel will follow the comics or if Philips will take creative liberties.
Joker: Folie á Deux is rumored to be a musical, and other talented singers may join Gaga to round out the story. But for now, fans will have to wait and see what surprises the film has in store.
