Congratulations on the release of your latest track, “Mosaic.” In this song, you delve into the journey of rediscovering oneself amidst feeling mistreated. Could you tell us the particular experiences or moments that served as your muse for exploring this theme in your song?
The idea for this song was inspired by reflecting on the feeling of being broken after a personal experience or life event. It’s something I think everyone feels at some point in their life. During Covid, I observed unfortunate circumstances happen to many people including myself. I think there was a sense of brokenness all around the world. Unfortunate experiences can leave you feeling shattered but also force you to rebuild yourself, really understand who you are in the process, and come out a stronger person. I really loved the idea of creating something beautiful out of something tragic. It reminded me of a mosaic or the Japanese art of Kintsugi.
This single mirrors a shift from vulnerability to inner strength. Could you share how this personal transformation influenced your writing process?
I think I’ve learned that there is strength in vulnerability. I don’t think internal strength comes from ignoring or suppressing how you feel. Suppression only worsens your emotional and mental health. Strength comes from trying to find the will power to overcome a burden and actively doing things that heal you. Music is a place where I feel comfortable being vulnerable.
Songwriting has given me deeper insight into myself, emotions, and what’s going on in my life. Over the years, I think I’ve become more confident in what I say and the ideas I explore in my songs. I’ve always had a shy tendency and as a result tend to hold a lot inside. I draw and address these unspoken things in my songs, which in a way is like creating a mosaic.
“Mosaic” hints at a struggle with self-identity. Can you elaborate on how this track relates to your own journey of self-discovery and authenticity?
I think the disappointing and crushing moments in my life have helped me discover who I am by showing me what I am not and what is not meant for me. These low points in life make you reflect on lessons learned, areas for growth, and why those experiences impacted you the way they did. It can be a very confronting process, but it allows you to really get to know yourself and see things that weren’t obvious before you were broken.
You’ve mentioned being inspired by artists like Jack Johnson, Colbie Caillat, and Taylor Swift. How did these influences come together to shape the sound and style of this new single?
They’ve all inspired me in different ways! I love the authenticity and rawness of Jack’s music, the sweetness and positivity of Colbie’s music and the storytelling and emotiveness of Taylor’s music. These are all qualities that I aspire to have in my own music. Sonically, I think the genre defying sound in Taylor’s music is amazing. This is something I’d like to do with my music transitioning into a more indie pop sound with “Mosaic.”
Can you give some insights on how you cultivate self-empowerment, both in your music and in your personal life?
Growing up, I struggled with self-confidence and shyness, so self-empowerment was something I’ve really had to work on over the years. I’ve tried to cultivate this by honoring myself, having a positive outlook in life, and giving my all in everything I do. I think these values are also expressed in my music. Music is a place where I feel free and open enough to be myself completely. I hope my music can empower others in the same way.
How do you hope your audience will connect with and interpret the message of this song?
I hope they will find strength in situations that have left them feeling broken. I want people to know that just because they were in a situation that left them feeling shattered, it doesn’t have to be a permanent state. They have the power to repair themselves and come out of the situation stronger than before. It might just be a blessing in disguise.
In your previous EP, Scenic Route, you explored a variety of themes. How does “Mosaic” fit into the broader story of your musical evolution, and what can fans look forward to in your future projects?
It’s super exciting to explore different musical styles and genres! “Mosaic” marks a shift in sound compared to my previous releases. It is more indie pop than folk and I wish to continue exploring the pop genre in future releases. At the end of the day, I like writing and releasing songs that resonate with people regardless of genre.
