As the potential TikTok ban approaches, Kesha is taking a moment to celebrate her iconic song “TiK ToK.” On January 16, she shared a video on social media featuring her breakthrough hit as the soundtrack. In the clip, she wrote: “TikTok may be temporary but TiK ToK is forever.”
Released in 2009, “TiK ToK” marked Kesha’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the first No. 1 song of the 2010s. Back in August, she commemorated the song’s 15th anniversary on X (formerly Twitter). Reflecting on its impact, Kesha expressed her pride in being able to share her voice and her name through this track.
“TiK ToK was the first single that had my voice AND my name credited!” she wrote, alongside the song’s glittery cover art. She recalled wanting to create something fun and happy, a feeling she hoped would resonate with others. “What I’m so proud of is that this song STILL makes me feel that way,” she added.
Kesha sees “TiK ToK” as a snapshot of her younger self. “That girl was naive and wild and playful,” she reflected. “This song eternalizes a side of myself that I love very much.” She acknowledged that the world has changed significantly since then, along with her own growth.
During the anniversary celebration, Kesha revealed her desire to change some lyrics in the song. She mentioned a recent alteration she made during Reneé Rapp’s Coachella set in April, where she included the line “f— P. Diddy” in response to sexual misconduct allegations against the rapper. Kesha later tweeted, “WAKE UP IN THE MORNING LIKE F— P DIDDY” in all caps, emphasizing her stance.
