Lil Nas X has released another single from his anticipated album Dreamboy, following the debut of the lead track “Light Again” last week. The latest song, “Need Dat Boy,” sees the rapper and singer opening up about personal struggles against a backdrop of piano melodies.
In “Need Dat Boy,” Lil Nas X delves into his emotions with raw lyrics: “Sorry darling I been down for a couple summers/Falling back in the crowd smokin’ marijuana,” he sings. “I been angsty/I been hurtin’/I been tryin’/Shit ain’t workin’/Yeah I dream big/Yet I descend/These days I don’t know what I believe in.”
The track begins with a somber tone but gains momentum, culminating in a vibrant sample of Trina’s 2000 hit “Pull Over” in the post-chorus. Here, Lil Nas X’s lyrics shift to a more upbeat tempo, singing, “I think I love that boy/I think I wanna get up on him/Ride up on that boy.”
While the release date for Dreamboy remains under wraps, Lil Nas X recently hinted on X about the album’s theme: “Dreamboy isn’t just an album. It’s me coping with the loss of what once was and fighting for a new world. I’m so excited to bring you on the journey.” This project will be the follow-up to his 2021 debut album, Montero.
Fans can listen to “Need Dat Boy” now, as they await more details on Lil Nas X‘s forthcoming musical exploration in Dreamboy.
