Warner Bros. has just released an abundance of exciting new material for the upcoming “Barbie” movie directed by Greta Gerwig. The studio recently unveiled 23 character posters that seemingly reveal the entire cast of the film, which had previously been kept under wraps. The posters confirm that Margot Robbie will play Barbie, with Ryan Gosling starring as Ken. But the rest of the cast is overflowing with talented actors, including Issa Rae, Nicola Coughlan, Sharon Rooney, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Ritu Arya, and even Kate McKinnon. The posters also revealed for the first time that pop star Dua Lipa has a role in the film as a mermaid Barbie.
Hours later, Warner Bros. also released the first official trailer for the movie. The Beach Boys-infused teaser trailer takes viewers to Barbie Land, where Barbie and Ken residents bask in the sun and the color pink. The teaser trailer pays homage to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and opens with a documentary-style narration that says, “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls.” The teaser then shows little girls playing with their dolls until a giant Margot Robbie’s Barbie appears, causing them to smash their baby dolls.
The teaser trailer offers a glimpse of what viewers can expect from the film, and it looks like it will be a fun, bright, and colorful adventure. Greta Gerwig is known for her unique perspective and creativity, and she has already hinted that the project was daunting, but that’s what drew her to it. When Robbie asked her to write the script, she immediately agreed. She even volunteered her partner Noah Baumbach without asking him. Gerwig revealed in Lipa’s podcast “At Your Service,” “I don’t know! I think I had a six-month-old baby when I said yes? And I wasn’t necessarily running everything by him . . . It was in March of 2020 that Noah said, ‘Are we meant to be writing a ‘Barbie’ movie?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘I don’t have any ideas for that! Why didn’t you sign us up to write a different thing?’ And I was like, ‘Because I have a feeling. I like Margot, and I have a feeling.'”
Although the “Barbie” movie’s cast is impressive, some of the actors have already shared their experiences on social media. Rooney, Nef, Alexandra Shipp, and Ana Cruz Kayne all posted photos from the production on their social media, including a picture from March featuring Robbie and Gerwig celebrating in the foreground. Hari Nef captioned the picture on Instagram, “It’s a wrap for the Doll! See you in Barbieland.”
Alexandra Shipp also shared a carousel of behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, including some hot pink Barbie clip art, to commemorate her time on the production. “Thank you @barbie,” she wrote. “Thank you #GretaGerwig for trusting me to portray one of your fabulous Barbies Thank you everyone who made this experience possible. I felt all the feels and love these humans so hard with all my strength! thank you cast, thank you crew, thank you production without everyone this experience wouldn’t be possible thank you thank you THANK YOU!“
Ryan Gosling has also spoken about his experience playing Ken. In an interview during his press tour for “The Gray Man,” Gosling said, “I can’t wait for people to see the film. That’s all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come in and box me up.” He also revealed some tidbits about his character, saying, “That Ken life is even harder than the ‘Gray Man
