Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane) is perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable people in the world. Everyone knows this gorgeous blond with the tiniest waist and the sensual songs. She was emblematic of the 1960’s sexual revolution. Her films grossed $200 million which is equivalent to $2 billion in 2020. In 1999 she ranked number 6 in the list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Not many know that Monroe spent her early childhood in foster homes and orphanages. After getting married at the age of 16, she began working in a factory. Her career in modeling began soon and later she had short-term film contracts. Some of her most popular films include As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don’t Bother to Knock.
Later on she performed in Bus Stop, The Prince and the Showgirl and won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her work in Some Like It Hot (1959).
Her death came too early. She died at the age of 36 from an overdose of barbiturates. Even though she’s gone, her style, beauty, and exceptional work will always be part of human history.
