In a recent interview, Usher, the iconic hip-hop artist, revealed that his preparation for the upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show began “30 years ago.” This revelation comes as he gears up to grace the stage at Super Bowl LVIII, set to take place at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11, 2024.
Despite his ongoing residencies and recent Las Vegas shows, Usher emphasized that his selection for the coveted Super Bowl slot wasn’t a result of his recent performances but a culmination of his lifelong dedication to his craft. He expressed his sentiment, stating, “The preparation didn’t start within the last two years of performing in Las Vegas. It really started 30 years ago, and my commitment to it and the journey that I’ve taken musically is why I think I’m given that moment,” in an interview with Extra.
Usher also shared his initial reaction upon receiving the offer from Jay-Z, the chairman and founder of Roc Nation, who has produced the halftime show for the past few years. He acknowledged the pressure associated with the performance, considering the legacy of artists like Beyoncé and Prince who have graced the same stage. When asked about what fans can expect from his show, Usher assured that they would experience a flurry of hit records, the songs that people recognize, and the tracks he celebrates. He tantalizingly hinted at the possibility of special guest appearances, teasing fans with a cryptic message: “I’ve also collaborated with a lot of people in the process, so… there’s a celebration there. I just gave it all to you. You gotta decode it.”
This anticipation isn’t new for Usher, as he previously shared his belief that the Super Bowl LVIII moment was destined to happen. Speaking to Zane Lowe of Apple Music 1 in September, he reflected on how his entire career had led him to this significant milestone.
