Avatar: The Way Of Water claims second best Wednesday of the year with a total of $14.3 million made in 4202 theatres; second to Top Gun: Maverick’s $14.8M on June 1. “Avatar 2 hopes to make $90M-$95M in its second four-day weekend, which has Christmas falling on Sunday,” said Deadline. The film tells the story of Jake Sully, who now lives as part of the tribe on Pandora, and soon faces more threats from the human race.
Even though the film made quite a bit of noise, The Guardian had nothing positive to say about it. Film critic Mark Kermode practically bashed the movie into the ground, saying: “Astonishing! Enthralling! Exciting! Immersive! None of these words could sensibly be applied to the three-and-a-quarter-hour Wet Smurfahontas stodgeathon that is Avatar: The Way of Water. A lumbering, humourless, tech-driven damp squib of a movie, this long-awaited (or dreaded?) sequel to one of the highest grossing films of all time builds upon the mighty flaws of its predecessor, delivering a patience-testing fantasy dirge that is longer, uglier and (amazingly) even more clumsily scripted than its predecessor.”
