A24’s new comedy film “Friendship” stars Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd as neighbors with a complicated relationship. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September and will be released in U.S. theaters on May 9, 2025.
The story follows Craig Waterman (Tim Robinson), a suburban dad who becomes obsessed with forming a friendship with his charismatic neighbor Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd). Initially, they bond over shared interests like punk rock and paleolithic antiquities. However, Craig’s obsessive personality soon alienates Austin, leading to chaos.
The cast includes Kate Mara as Craig’s wife Tami Waterman, Jack Dylan Grazer as Steven, Josh Segarra as another character named Austin (not the main one), Billy Bryk, Jason Veasey, Jon Glaser, Eric Rahill, Conner O’Malley among others.
Director Andrew DeYoung makes his feature film debut with this project. Both Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd were drawn to the script for its blend of humor and sadness. The trailer showcases their comedic chemistry but also hints at deeper themes about male relationships gone wrong.
“Friendship” has received positive reviews since its premiere at TIFF in 2024. It holds an impressive approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was second runner-up for the People’s Choice Award in Midnight Madness at TIFF.
The movie promises to deliver laughter while exploring complex human connections through two vastly different characters brought together by circumstances.
