El Chico is turning back the clock—but only to push music forward. His latest single, “80’s Travel”, is a high-energy fusion of past and present, wrapping vintage synths and infectious melodies in a sleek, contemporary sound. Singing in both English and Spanish, he effortlessly bridges cultures and eras, creating a track that feels both timeless and futuristic.
Born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and raised in Tijuana, El Chico (Erick Alonso Moreno) has built a sound that thrives on contrast. Inspired by artists like Kevin Kaarl and Cuco, his music combines alternative, pop, and Latin influences into something distinctly his own. “80’s Travel” isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about reinvention, proving that the past is never truly gone when an artist dares to reshape it. With his unique sonic identity and fearless genre-blending, El Chico isn’t just revisiting history—he’s making his own.
How do you envision the evolution of your music in the next few years? Do you think you’ll continue blending different genres, or do you feel there’s a new direction you’ll explore?
I believe my music brings a unique blend of futuristic sounds intertwined with nostalgic past vibes, creating something truly distinctive and captivating. I’m committed to continuously exploring sounds and genres beyond my current horizons. This journey not only helps me refine my artistry but also strengthens my musical identity, making it impossible to overlook.
You’ve said you’ve gone through a period of discovering your unique sound. What was the “ah-ha” moment when you realized you were fully embracing your own voice in your music instead of just being influenced by others?
I believe the turning point for me was when I finally embraced my own voice. Many artists struggle with accepting their unique voices, often trying to imitate others. But once I discovered and accepted my true voice, I felt a deeper connection to my music. That was my ‘ah-ha’ moment—realizing it was authentically me in every note and lyric.
When you create, is there a specific environment or routine that helps you get into the flow? For example, do you prefer to write alone, or do you enjoy collaborating with others in the studio?
I enjoy adding a touch of creativity and spontaneity to my writing and recording routine. Sometimes, I’ll dress up as the character I’m bringing to life in my song—it helps me embody the story more deeply. Other times, I’ll sit by the window in my home studio and gaze at the sky. It’s such a calming practice, and it always sparks my imagination and creativity.
Growing up between multiple cultures, what’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself as an artist, whether in terms of sound, themes, or what connects with people?
I think the biggest breakthrough for me has been learning to accept who I am. This year especially, I found myself wrestling with self-doubt whenever I had unconventional ideas, sounds, or stories. It felt chaotic and strange—one moment I’d be inspired by a country melody, and the next by something completely different. But over time, I realized that’s just who I am: curious and eager to explore beyond what’s familiar. Embracing this part of myself has been incredibly freeing.
If you could bring one element of the ’80s into today’s music scene, what would it be and why?
I’d love to bring back the clothes and disco vibes of the ’80s. That era had a unique energy—a sense of freedom and individuality that’s hard to replicate. For me, the funky rhythms and danceable beats embody a carefree spirit that’s both timeless and inspiring.
Do you think your music speaks more to the past, the present, or the future? How do you balance nostalgia with your own style?
I’d say I’m trying to do all three at once: take you on a unique journey through a time capsule. My music invites you to experience the vibes of the ’80s and ’90s, transition into the 2000s, and still feel grounded in 2025. At the same time, I want to sprinkle in a touch of futuristic glamour—what I imagine the sound of the future could be.
When you’re not working on music, what’s something that inspires you or keeps you motivated?
I enjoy expressing myself through writing, whether it’s about my thoughts, experiences, or personal growth. I’m deeply inspired by self-improvement, self-love, and the journey of becoming a better version of myself. I also find motivation in following the paths of my favorite artists, like Prince, David Bowie, and Stromae, or even in something as simple yet fulfilling as running. There’s so much I’m passionate about and so many things I enjoy doing that it’s hard to capture everything all at once.
If you could describe your music in one sentence, what would you say?
My music is a journey through time, inspired by different eras, cultures, and my roots.
