Unwrapping the Meaning of Christmas: A Conversation with Andrew Macdonald

On this Christmas Day, we bring you a heartfelt conversation with singer-songwriter Andrew Macdonald, whose latest holiday single, “Merry Christmas,” has been warming hearts and inspiring reflection this season. The song invites listeners to pause and consider the true meaning behind the words we so often say during this time of year.

In a world where holiday greetings can sometimes feel routine, Andrew Macdonald’s “Merry Christmas” is a gentle yet powerful reminder of the deeper significance of the season. With its message of faith, gratitude, and renewal, the track serves as a perfect introduction to his upcoming album Heart, Soul, Mind & Strength.

Today, Andrew shares his thoughts on the inspiration behind his music, his personal Christmas traditions, and the joys of celebrating this day with faith and family. Let this special interview be a moment of reflection and joy as we dive into the story behind “Merry Christmas” and its message for all of us.

“Merry Christmas” offers a fresh perspective on a well-known holiday greeting. What inspired you to write a song centered around those two words?

The word “fresh” is one of the reasons. It’s really not ‘fresh’ or new, but unfortunately it does seem to have become that for many people. So, “Merry Christmas” is a strong yet joyful reminder of the reason why we are celebrating. We must not forget that. I find that those who do understand that experience Christmas differently and more meaningfully. As the song says, it’s “a happiness words can’t quite explain.” I want people to enjoy the song, but the message is really important.

You’ve mentioned that the song encourages reflection on the true spirit of Christmas. What does the phrase “Merry Christmas” personally mean to you?

He’s here. He’s really here. I can only imagine what it was like for his parents at that moment. And just looking at people when they wish someone Merry Christmas, you can sense that same feeling. He’s here; he’s with us; that’s what it means to me.

The holidays are a time of tradition and routine for many people. How do you think music, especially a song like yours, can help deepen or reshape those traditions?

Of course, Christmas music has become part of those traditions and routines, but I think music plays a unique role in uniting us as we celebrate those traditions. I’m always amazed that people, who generally would never sing, will sing a Christmas song with others. As the song says, “‘Merry Christmas,’ are two words we love to say.”  My hope with the song is that these become words we love to sing each and every year.

Your upcoming album Heart, Soul, Mind & Strength dives into themes of faith, humility, and personal growth. How does “Merry Christmas” fit into the broader narrative of the album?

The overarching theme of Heart, Soul, Mind & Strength is the journey of loving God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This requires deeper faith, humility, and spiritual growth. The celebration of Christmas that we get to do each year provides another opportunity to move forward in that journey, knowing that millions around the world are doing the same.

The holiday season is often a time of reflection and gratitude. What are you most grateful for this year?

This year has been a tremendous leap in my faith, allowing me to grow closer to God. Much change in me has taken place, including beginning with my music. I also began studies toward a Master’s in Theology at Notre Dame, which has allowed me to think and reflect more deeply about my faith. My family, the love of my life (my wife of 35 years this December 29), and all the incredible blessings I have come from God. Becoming closer to God teaches me a deeper and deeper thankfulness.

Do you have any special Christmas traditions or memories that influenced the creation of “Merry Christmas”?

I was raised by parents who loved Jesus Christ above all things in their lives. He was at the center of our Christmas. There was never any doubt about what Christmas was about in our home. That never left me, and never will.

What does your ideal Christmas Day look like, and how does music play a role in your celebrations?

It will begin with church. I sing in our CCM Church Band, and it’s always such a joyful celebration, and being able to sing just takes it to another level. I am new to all this, and it’s been very interesting for me to experience the impact that music is having on me spiritually. Then it’s all about family and being together. Of course, we will be listening to music for a good part of the day.

If you could collaborate with any artist to create a Christmas song, who would it be and why?

Wow, that is a great and difficult question. If I could collaborate with Matt Maher or Matt Redman on any song, that would be a dream. Their work and their faith are such an inspiration to me. (I hope I can thank them someday.) I also think our voices would work well together. Non-CCM artists… the list would be too long, but they would have to be believers.

As we head into a new year, what are your hopes and goals for your music and your personal journey in 2025?

My personal mission in life is to help create a better world. It’s been my life’s work for many years. Music only recently became part of that when I began writing and singing two years ago. My hope is that this will continue to evolve and grow and that all my work, including music, intertwines in a message of greater and greater faith, hope, and love in the world.
