Até On “Orange Bird”: Breaking Free And Soaring To New Creative Heights

Electronic artist, DJ, and goddess of mischief, Até has always been known for her fearless approach to music, blending dark, driving techno with experimental soundscapes that push the boundaries of electronic music. With the release of her latest single, “Orange Bird,” she continues to evolve and captivate, inviting listeners into an emotional journey of self-discovery and freedom. Featuring deep, immersive energy and lyrics that speak to the thrill of stepping beyond one’s comfort zone, the track captures the essence of transformation and escape. Alongside the original, Fro’s remix adds an electrifying breakbeat twist, taking the song to new heights and amplifying its already powerful impact. We caught up with Até to discuss the inspiration behind “Orange Bird,” her evolution as an artist, and what it means to embrace the night and her own creative freedom.

“Orange Bird” has such a unique vibe. What sparked the idea for this track and its themes of freedom and self-discovery?

The inspiration for “Orange Bird” came from a vibrant green parrot I spotted with a friend while we were relaxing on a rooftop, making music on my laptop with headphones. Interestingly, my color-blind friend perceived it as orange—a colorful twist! Around the same time, I was grappling with the desire to pursue something I was afraid of, which influenced the lyrics. While recovering from COVID, I recorded the vocals at home, and the rough quality of my voice added an authentic layer to the track.

The track has a dark, immersive energy. How do you want listeners to feel when they experience it?

I want listeners to feel bittersweet melancholy as they reflect on the dark times we’ve all faced, yet also a thrilling urge to step out of their comfort zones and pursue their true desires. Ultimately, my hope is that they feel empowered by the music and inspired to take action.

Fro’s remix takes the song in a whole new direction. How did you and Fro collaborate on that? What was the vision behind it?

Fro and I previously teamed up on “Human Delete – Abstract Machine,” which laid a solid foundation for our friendship and creative collaboration. When I shared “Orange Bird” with him, he expressed genuine interest in remixing it, and I was thrilled to have such a talented artist put their unique spin on it. His creativity helped elevate the track in exciting ways!

You describe the “Orange Bird” as a journey of escape. Can you tell us what that journey looks like for you as the artist?

For a long time, I felt trapped in a lifestyle that didn’t align with my passion. I was studying finance and then working in Human Resources, facing immense pressure. One day, I made the bold decision to quit my office job and fully commit to music. I believed that if I could succeed in a field that didn’t resonate with me, I could channel that energy into my true passion and see where it would take me. It was a risk, but one I am incredibly grateful for.

The persona of the “goddess of mischief” is powerful. How does that identity shape your music and performances?

This persona allows me to tease and explore funky grooves that go beyond traditional techno. It encourages me to interact with my audience more dynamically, performing each selection with its own vibe.

If you could describe your evolution as an artist in one word, what would it be and why?

Self-confidence. As a young woman in the scene, I often felt I wasn’t taken seriously. I worked incredibly hard to hone my skills and overcome that perception. Now, I’ve reached a stage where I feel secure in my artistry, unaffected by external judgments. I just keep doing what I love.

Is there a moment in your career when you realized you were on the path you were meant to be on?

I experience that realisation each time I perform or spend hours engrossed in the studio. The joy and fulfilment I find in creating music remind me I’m on the right path. After a long studio session, I often find myself in a state of nirvana—it’s an amazing feeling.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as an artist, and how has it shaped the way you approach your music?

The best advice I’ve received was, “We are artists, not machines.” This insight allowed me to embrace my individuality and express my true self in my music. For years, I tried to conform to a strict techno mold, which stifled my creativity. By liberating myself artistically, I discovered my authentic music style, something I genuinely enjoy.

When you’re not making music, what’s something that completely inspires you or takes you out of the creative space?

I draw immense inspiration from dancing, particularly through pole dancing. I’ve always loved movement and rhythm, and the challenge of pole dancing excites me. It combines strength, grace, and creativity in a way that feels freeing and empowering. When I’m on the pole, I can completely zone out and tap into a flow state, allowing myself to recharge and rediscover my creative energy. It’s an exhilarating experience that not only inspires my music but also reinforces my connection to rhythm and movement.
