Maren Morris’ Musical Journey Through Personal Struggles

In the fall of 2023, Maren Morris faced a turning point, announcing her departure from country music and filing for divorce from her husband, Ryan Hurd. “Everything in my life fell apart last year,” she reflects.

To cope, Maren Morris turned to songwriting, determined to move forward. Her new EP, Intermission, explores personal growth and emotional complexity. Songs like “Cut” reveal vulnerability, while “Because, Of Course” celebrates unconditional love. “Songwriting was a great escape during last year’s chaos,” she says.

Collaborating with artists like Joel Little and MUNA, Morris expanded her creative horizons. Her single “Push Me Over” boldly explores her sexuality. Reflecting on her collaboration with MUNA, she notes, “Writing with them was liberating.”

Earlier this year, Morris embraced her bisexuality, receiving widespread support. “It felt right to be open,” she explains.

The EP’s final track, “This Is How a Woman Leaves,” captures her emotional journey through divorce. “I listened to it on the way to divorce court,” she recalls, hoping it offers comfort to others.

Morris is eager to see how fans respond to her new music live. Her tour features setlists based on fan requests, attracting a younger audience. This dynamic approach helps her reconnect with overlooked songs. “Playing requested tracks reminds me of who I was when I wrote them,” she says.

For Morris, Intermission represents a significant chapter in her life. Looking ahead, she wants to explore different creative avenues, including writing for a Broadway musical. “Writing from someone else’s perspective is refreshing,” she says.
