Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, and Stray Kids have already been announced as performers for the upcoming 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Joining this star-studded lineup is none other than Shakira, who was officially added to the list on the morning of August 28.
MTV’s confirmation of Shakira as this year’s recipient of the Video Vanguard Award has stirred up excitement, especially considering that the Colombian icon will be gracing the VMAs stage for her first performance in a remarkable 17 years.
Reports suggest that Shakira is highly likely to grace the stage with her 2023 hit “TQG,” a collaboration with Karol G. The track, which debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March, is anticipated to be a major highlight of the event.
Karol G had previously shared her thoughts on working alongside Shakira on “TQG.” In an interview with Uproxx, she expressed her admiration, referring to Shakira as a legend who has brought global recognition to their shared home country, Colombia. Karol G revealed that she was both nervous and excited about the video shoot, aiming to push herself to deliver her best performance and make Shakira proud of their collaboration. The experience of learning the choreography and sharing a close connection over the song brought them even closer together.
Shakira’s reception of the Video Vanguard Award will mark her as the sixth consecutive female artist to be honored, following the likes of Rihanna (2016), Pink (2017), Jennifer Lopez (2018), Missy Elliott (2019), and Nicki Minaj (2022). It’s interesting to note that the award was not presented in the years 2020 and 2021.
